The Path To Gibfest 2

The Setup:
When Gibfest 2 was being arranged, I was asked by the GF team if I wanted to be involved in the organizing of the event. I politely declined as I was quite busy at work and didn't have the time. I told Dave (iAgo) Wakeman that I would help out if I had time. I was able to do a few things such as advertising on this site for the event.

When GF2 was getting nearer, I had a bit more time on my hands so, I called Dave and Chris (Reaper) and asked if there was anything I could do to help. They still hadn't found a venue for the event so, I decided to call a couple of friends and I was able to get the Radisson hotel ballroom for an incredible price. I also arranged for my buddy Rick (a graphics artist) to make a banner for the event. (at no charge)

The Voice:
Another thing that I became was a nattering voice in Dave's head. It seemed that I was the one who thought of every little thing that the GF team may have forgotten. I did this because I've been to other Lan events and there's always something missing. I didn't want this to happen at GF2. Thankfully, as a group, we covered all the bases, right down to the tiniest detail.

The Trophy:
Probably the easiest task I had on my agenda was to buy a plaque to be presented as the Methos Quake Award at the tourney. Let me tell you, this was far from the easiest task. How hard could it be to get a plaque? I called a trophy company (I won't mention the name of it because they're a bunch of idiots) and asked about their plaques. "Oh, he's sick today, call back next week". Okay, no problem, GF2 was still a month away. I call the next week, arrange to meet the "computer" guy when he's at work the next week. Hmm, okay, another week down the drain.

Two weeks to go. I finally got a hold of the guy on the phone and asked if he made his plaques on computer with true type fonts. He said that he did so, I asked if he had the Quake 2 font. He didn't so, when I went in to see him, I brought the 3 quake fonts (Quake2, Copperplate and Exocet) on a diskette. He wasn't there so, I left him a note along with the fonts diskette.

He phoned me and said that he couldn't import them. (wtf?) I asked him what program he was trying to import them into and he told me, Corel v4.0. Hmm, okay computer guy, you can't import them into Corel4, that's for adobe TTF's only. Just copy them to your /fonts directory. Still didn't work. Hmm, what operating system are you using? "Windows v3.1" (wtf?) He then told me that he had a friend with Win98 and Corel8. Okay, great. Go see your friend and do it there.

Four days later, he called me and told me they couldn't import the fonts into Corel8. (%$@^%&^) Umm, didn't I mention you couldn't do that? Just copy them into your fonts directory on the win98 pc. "Oh, my friend went out of town for a while, we can do it when he gets back".

It's now 3 days before the tourney and I'm to the point of panic as it had been announced on the GF2 site that I was presenting an award. I asked him if he had finished the plaque. He told me that they had a few problems with it. Ready to reach through the phone and strangle him, I asked whether he would have it done or if I had to get it someplace else. He told me that he "might be able to get it done". I told him to stay where he was and that I was on my way down to see him.

Using generic fonts, we were able to design a plaque. Not the plaque I wanted as they didn't have my top 10 choices of plaques in stock. I told him "listen, I don't care if you take a fucking felt pen and write it on cardboard, just have something for me when I return on Friday". While I was leaving the store, I noticed the kind of plaque I wanted. I said "I thought you didn't have these in stock?". He said "Oh, I guess I missed that one." (sigh)

I called on Friday and was told by his partner that he went out of town. (oh-oh) I informed his partner that I was coming down and he'd better have a plaque for me. When I got there, I saw both of them in the store (out of town?), and the partner gave me the plaque I had ordered. He tried to charge me double the price but, when I gave him a look that said I would rip his arms off, he gave me a good price on the plaque. (whew)

Gibfest2 Arrives:
The day started off bad for me. I had 3 hours sleep (turns out everybody had only 3-4 hours sleep), then I had car troubles. I ended up arriving about 1 hour after I was planning to. This wasn't a problem since I wasn't on the "official" GF2 team so, I could actually show up at any time.

Upon arrival, I was greeted by a bunch of friendly Quakers (yeah, even though they all play Q2) with "Hi's" and handshakes all around. I brought 2 things with me. One was the Gibfest 2 banner and the Methos Quake Award that I was presenting. Dave came over and greeted me, then he took the banner from me. At that moment, it dawned on me that I hadn't looked at the banner yet. OMG, what happens if it says "Gabfest2" or something else? No worries, it was gorgeous and looked much better than it looks in the GF2 pics.

Approximately 15 minutes after I arrived, we had a power failure for a couple of the tables. The head maintenance guy was there and he quickly told us the circuitry and we ran a new cable, after that, no problems at all with the power. There was one guy who couldn't get his pc on the Lan because of his network card, we tried other but, they couldn't connect either. That was the end of any problems for the entire day.

The Prelims:
After some warm-up play on a DM64 map and after figuring out who was there and who hadn't arrived, the preliminary matches started at 11:45 a.m. (15 minutes late) after the first round, things went very fast. In these 3 rounds, most of the score were one-sided but, they got closer as the matches went on. After approx. 2 hours, we had the 30 players going to the finals and we were back on schedule.

The DM64 Match:
This match was awesome. 46 players were playing in this FFA match for 45 minutes. This was a true test of stamina but, most players said that it felt like a 20-25 minute match. Talk about close, with 1 minute left, there was a 3-way tie between TC-Ethereal, TC-Sparhawk and KA-Nova. At the end, Nova won by 1 frag over Sparhawk. As a point of interest, Nova is 12 years old and has amazing aim. He beat out a lot of very good players to win the match. The room was deadly silent until the end of the match and everybody broke into a huge round of applause. Great job, Nova.

Everybody was a bit tired and very hungry, we broke for a long supper so that everybody could take a much deserved break. After supper, we arranged a bunch of other game servers so that the people who were already out of the tourney had something to do. There was an FFA, CTF & Qpong server setup. There were also games of Half-Life and Blood2 being played.

The 30 Player Countdown:
In every round of the single elimination finals, there were some great matches. Most matches were decided by a few frags and the play was quite intense. Nova (the 12 year old monster) lost out to TC-^Draven in the second round of the finals.

In the quarter finals, I saw the best Q2 match I've ever seen. The match was between TC-^Draven and TC-Ethereal. The final score was 0 to -1 for Draven who almost got killed with 6 seconds left in the match when Ethereal had him hurt about 3 feet away when he ran out of rockets. By the time the weapon switched, Draven was gone and won the match.

Then There Were Four:
In the semi-finals, all four players were from clan TC (Thunder Clan). Sparhawk, Draven, Sluggo and Foujin. After the matches were over, Dave announced, "you'll be happy to hear that 2 TC guys are out of the tourney". Err, umm, yeah, okay.

Methos Quake Award:
Just before the clan matches, I was asked to give out the Methos Quake Award. I had discussed who to give the award to with a few of the GF2 team and they all agreed that my choice was a great choice. I presented the Methos Quake Award for the "Coolest Player" at Gibfest 2 to TC-^Draven. I was actually a bit surprised by the very loud applause he received when I announced it. He was very grateful for the award.

The Clan Finals:
Since only 3 clans showed up, we decided to do a round robin, total frags wins. KA beat RA by 80 frags. TC beat KA by 38 frags. In the last match, TC beat RA by 102 frags to win the overall frags by 37 frags. Congrats to TC on their impressive win.

The 1on1 Final:
When we were making arrangements for the tourney, we had planned to get a big screen to display the matches. At the time, the screen would've cost $100 for the day. By the time we went to rent it, the price had risen to $250. Needless to say, it didn't happen. I made the suggestion to have a bunch of observers and show the game around the room. Since 3/4 of all the people stayed til the last match, this turned out to be a great idea.

People grabbed chairs and positioned themselves around the chasecam monitors. The room fell silent and the final match began. Most people were glued to the monitors while Sparhawk and Sluggo dueled for the title. It was close for the first half of the match until Sparhawk started to pull away. Once he got the advantage, it seemed that there wasn't much Sluggo could do. The final score was 10 to 1 for Sparhawk and he was crowned 1on1 champion for the second time.

He received the accolades of everybody in the room and, of course, the "cheap plastic trophy". Congrats Spar, well done.

The Aftermath:
It was 11:50 p.m. We had finished 10 minutes ahead of schedule. Nearly everybody was tired but, everybody said they had a great time. For those that were attending a Lan tourney for the first time, most of them were delighted by how much fun they had.

Needless to say, we were all exhausted. The teardown didn't take long at all, myself, Dave, Ethereal, Shade & HBK went for a bite to eat and then got home around 2:30 a.m.

It was a great time. Thanks to all who attended and the incredible job the GF2 team did putting it all together. Maybe we can do another next week? :p

[Thursday 12/31/98 - 1:00 am]

Somebody mentioned to me the other day that I forgot to archive the news page and the .plan page from November. It's a bit late now so, I'll wait until January and archive the whole thing. Make sure it's mentioned earlier next time. :)

----------

As I mentioned on the news page, I had quite a few responses to the Lakerman interview. Some were surprising, most were expected. A lot of Americans didn't know who he was but, were amazed when they downloaded a couple of his demos. A lot of Swedes tend to think Lakerman has an ego problem so they took the interview as him promoting himself.

My thoughts on the interview were that he was very honest and answered some tough questions that were not the normal "politically correct" questions you would see in most interviews. I'd like to thank Lakerman for doing the interview and not "copping out" on the answers. I know that he could've mentioned many more names regarding cheating but he decided not to.

----------

A very cool (and true) story. The Swedes are coming!!! Actually, they're already here. In the city I live in, the World Junior Hockey Championships are being held this week. These are for the best 17-18 year old hockey players from 12 countries (I think) around the world.

I received a phone call 2 days ago from a man who said he was a representative for the Swedish junior hockey team. I didn't get his name as he didn't speak English very well. How he got my number, I'll never know.

After introducing himself, he asked me if I was the one that used the name Methos while on the Internet and if I ran a web site called "Me-toes Quick". I told him that I was Methos. He then told me that the players in the tournament each received 2 box seats (the expensive ones) for each of the games they play in and that there were two tickets for me for a game this weekend. (all games had been sold out long ago, how cool is that)

I asked him why, and was told that a couple of the players (he didn't mention any names) had asked if he could get me some tickets. Perhaps I'll get a chance to meet the players that seem to know who I am.

----------

I spoke with ClanUK member Hakeem (did I spell it right?) and we discussed the upcoming matches between ClanUK and [9] from Sweden. He mentioned a few items of interest.

  • The matches should take place in mid-February
  • There is no truth to the rumors that the UK sponsors won't come through for the matches. However, there have been some delays
  • The matches will coincide with a Quake2 tourney happening in London on the same weekend
  • The UK team will be able to get in a week (or so) of Lan practice prior to the event
  • Most people have told Hakeem that Clan [9] will easily win (I didn't say that)

I hope that the matches will happen and that the event is as successful as the 9vsDR matches.

[Monday 12/28/98 - 1:30 am]

Ahh Christmas, ya gotta love it. I made it through Xmas relatively unscathed. After spending somewhere around a million dollars, going shopping on Christmas Eve (big mistake), buying the wrong thing for everybody one my list and eating WAY too much, I made it through in one piece. I hope you and your families were relatively sane after the festivities.

----------

I spoke with a Quake friend of mine on Christmas day. He was a bit down because he had lost a friend a while back and it bothered him around Xmas. The only thing I could say to him is to be happy with what he has. It's a shame that he lost his friend but, life goes on. He happens to have a gorgeous, healthy wife and they love each other very much. That's more than most people have.

----------

I talked to Timber yesterday in regards to the ClanUK vs [9] matches coming in the next couple of months. He told me that he didn't know when the games would be played but, it should be early in February (1999). He did mention that there would be 5 games total and all of them would be done with the QW mod. (hmm, wasn't QW made for Internet play?) Timber thinks that there will be 3 - dm3 matches and 2 - e1m2 matches.

When I asked him how he thought the UK guys would do against [9], he said "we're going to kick their ass in every game and we should win all 5 games". Nah, just kidding, he said "I'm not sure how we're going to do. I hope we play well since they're a very good clan".

Only comment I have is... How will they divide up the responsibilities for the UK guys? If it stays as it is now, there'll be Ceno covering the bridge and Timber, Sujoy and Hakeem all fighting for the quad. :) Don't worry guys, I'm only joking but, it's a question that has come up. Positional play will be ultra-important against the guys from [9].

----------

I played some Quake (actually QW) on-line a couple of days ago for the first time in about a month and lo and behold, I still suck at it. Although I was still on modem, I had a decent connection. I played for about 10 minutes and then left so that I could cry.  :)

----------

Question: Is there a better Quake clan in the world right now than Clan Z from Finland? I know that they've been good for quite a while but, I can't think of any clan that would beat them on an even playing feild. Their core players are some of the best around and their team play and communication has always been second to none.

----------

Did anybody happen to notice the size of the NQ demos that I posted over the last few days? I don't know what kind of zipping method people use but, when I recompress them, they tend to be 1/3 of the original zip size.

Good examples are the demos from Australia and the Reaper demo from Lakerman. The demo from Lakerman was 2.3 megs when he sent it, after I recompressed it went down to 858k. The demos from AU were almost 2 megs, now they're 641k. What gives?

----------

I watched the Quake Done Quick 100% Lite yesterday. Can these guys find anymore shortcuts in Quake? These guys are just amazing (or a-MAZ-ing as Ettu said) and I hate them because just when I think I can do some of the tricks, they come up with a dozen more tricks I can't do. Puh!

----------

I watched some golf competition on TV. It was the World Longest Drive Championships (yeah, it was a boring TV night). The winner (from Canada) hit the ball 362 yards (1082 feet) on a completely flat surface. Yikes, now that's quite the swing. I think it would take me 3 swings to get it that far. Err, if I ever played real life golf, that is. :)

----------

For those that have asked, Yes, I was able to see my "gorgeous blond neighbor" (vavoom!) 4 times over Christmas. Now that's what I call a nice present. :)

[Sunday 12/20/98 - 3:30 am]

If I don't get to update this page again before Christmas. I'd like to wish all the visitors to Methos Quake the best of the holiday season to you and your families. A special Xmas wish to all the friends I've made over the past year. I can't mentioning all the names because the list is far too long. You guys and gals know who you are.

I would like to mention three people though. Those are the people who have helped me with the site over the past while. In no particular order, Charles (Spookie), Tony (DBs) and Paul (Paul2). All the best at Xmas to you guys.

----------

It's true, Christmas causes hearing defects. Here's proof. Every time I ask my daughter "What would you like for Xmas?", she thinks that I've said "Name the 10 most expensive things that you could ever want me to buy for you".

----------

As I mentioned on the news page, I went over to TC-iAgo's place along with the rest of the admins for the Gibfest 2 tourney coming up on Jan. 9th, 1999. Dave was a gracious host and was heard many times saying "get your own fucking beer!". This is the same guy that had hair down to his ass and had to go to China to get it cut so that his girlfriend wouldn't slap him around.

We went over the entire setup for the tourney and figured out what we can do to make this the best Q2 tourney ever. We covered everything possible and even some of the impossible and I think we are as prepared as we're ever going to be. If somebody has any quick suggestions that people seem to miss when setting up a tourney, send me mail and let me know.

The "adjustments" we made will be posted on www.gibfest.org very soon. (if Reaper ever gets his lazy ass in gear, j/k)

----------

Top 5 things overheard at the Gibfest 2 admin meeting.

  1. Continuous sobbing (iAgo's girlfriend whenever somebody (me) mentioned iAgo's haircut)
  2. You Suck! (iAgo to Reaper)
  3. Shut-UP! (Reaper to iAgo)
  4. Okay, where the hell is the rest of the registration money, Methos? Fork it over!
  5. Since we enabled Zbot protection, how are we going to use our bots and not let other players know about it? (All TC guys)

[Sunday 12/6/98 - 6:00 am]

As I mentioned on the news page, Paul2 has informed me that he won't be doing the QMH page after his next update. Before QMH, I started looking for another author to do a page on the site to be sort of a European version of Spookie's page. I asked a couple of the great Euro players that didn't already contribute to a site (not easy to find) without much luck other than a few "I might have time" answers.

I had seen Paul2 many times on the Quake.uk irc channel and I always laughed at what he had to say and I was impressed by his never ending quick wit. Even early in the morning, Paul was always bemused by those that would even hint at challenging his sharp retorts.

After seeing Paul in action on irc for the n'th time. I decided to ask him if he would like to do a page on Methos Quake. He seemed a bit skeptical at first until I told him that he could talk about anything he wanted, swear as much as he wanted and whomever he wanted.

Except for a few things on the page, (the title, page design and especially the disclaimer) Paul did everything. I expected it to be just a couple of paragraphs that I would put a date on and post but, it was much more. He had everything nicely laid-out with sections & titles.

After the first installment of the QMH page, I thought the mail would never end. I received mail that came from all parts of the world. 99% of all mail was very positive, to the point of some people telling me that they couldn't read it because they were laughing so hard. Of course, I also had mail saying things like "I'm never going to visit your site again", "What the fuck is this shit?" and "Why does that Paul guy keep saying we cheat?". (you can guess where those came from)

Most readers don't know anything about Paul2 other than he insults a lot of people and likes to use the word "cunt" an awful lot. For those that are interested, he's not a smartass kid, he's a family man who lives in England. No, he doesn't spend all day playing Quake or yapping on irc. As a matter of fact, he doesn't even have a computer at home. He does all his Quake playing and on-line chatting while he's a work during the week. Also, he's not as bad a Quaker as he tells people.

So, there you have it. The QMH has become very popular these days and it's a shame to see it end. Paul, thanks for the good laughs. Your attitude towards on-line gaming is different than most but, that's what makes your page fun to read. The sub-title "Diary of a Quake Madman" certainly fit in this particular case. Take care bud, I have the key to the hospital doors if you decide to add a new wing on the QMH building.

----------

In the DC/UKCL picture on the news page, I tried to get a couple of the DC guys to pose for the picture but, for some reason, no DC guys were around at 5 in the morning. So, I got another great UK Quake player to stand in on the photo shoot. The fashion model on the left is none other than Paul2 using DC-DD's skin. Unfortunately, I can't remember who the guy on the right is. He's a player from France that just happened to come on the server while Paul and I were taking the UKCLDM2 pics so, he joined in. Thanks to both guys. Next stop, GQ magazine! :-)

[Tuesday 11/24/98 - 9:00 pm]

Well, the updates seem to be getting further and further apart. A few people have been asking me if I am going to "pull a Hoony" and all but shut down the site. I won't lie to anybody and tell you that I haven't thought about it lately.

Unfortunately, real life™ has been very busy these days. With me being a management weasel at work, Christmas coming for the kids and lots of other stuff, it's hard to put in the time to do updates on a regular basis. The move to the Barrysworld servers has been an annoyance even though the BW guys have tried to make it as painless as possible.

I'll see what the future holds and hopefully things will get better. I'm sure that things will ease up at work soon so I'll be able to concentrate on other things. Since I don't actually have a life, it's shouldn't be too hard.

----------

I've been looking to update one of my computers or possibly buy another one. I noticed that Thresh's site had a "head to head" comparison of the Sound Blaster Live and the Diamond Monster sound card so I figured I would go and check it out.

After wallowing through the slowest site this side of the earth (damn shtml), I started reading the "reviews". It was an experience I won't soon forget. The comparison was 16 pages long (yes, 16) and every page was filled with 60% of stuff that had nothing to do with the article that could've been done on a few pages.

Only a few pages had anything on them that was "concrete" type of information that people would use for comparison. What it boiled down to was Kenn's opinion and exactly what I thought he would say at the end. He even said "tired of me sitting on the fence?" and then kept sitting there. He mention that the SB would be better after proper NT drivers were available and the Diamond drivers were still in beta so he couldn't reach a definite decision. Bah!

----------

Watched 2 similar movies this past weekend. They were "Armageddon" and "Deep Impact" (with my gorgeous blond neighbor). It was probably a mistake to watch Armageddon first as the overall mood of the movie was much more entertaining than Deep Impact.

I enjoyed both movies but, Dreamwork's Deep Impact just seemed to be released at the wrong time. As well done as it was, it couldn't compete with the entertainment value of Armageddon.

----------

I was finally able to get a venue for the Gibfest 2 tourney coming in January. When GF2 started, Dave and Chris asked if I wanted to help out but, I politely declined saying that my time was limited. Since then, I've been sort of working behind the scene to get things happening.

I was able to get a hold of an old friend of mine named Nina who is the General Manager at one of the Radisson hotels here in the city. She gave me a very "sweet" deal on the ballroom so, GF2 will happen in style.

----------

Is the end of Quake near? You don't hear much "real" Quake news these days. Everything seems to be Q2, Unreal, SiN, Quake 3 Arena and especially Half-Life. If the WDT doesn't happen, it's going to be a huge drought until Q3A is released.

I omitted mentioning Daikatana on purpose. Even though it's been getting press these days, it's for all the wrong reasons. I hope it will still be released as I want to see it finished.

[Thursday 11/19/98 - 5:00 am]

Geez, it's been a long time since I rambled on this page. I'll have to make up for lost time.

----------

I've been reading in the UK Quake mailing list and a few other places such as Ceno's site, that people are saying that the Quake & QW scene in the UK is dying. I've been feeling this way for a while also. Matter of fact, I remember feeling the same way approx. 6 months ago. Why didn't it fall apart 6 months ago? I think it had a lot to do with the excitement from the 9vsDR matches that was just on the horizon.

What is causing this feeling this time around? I'm not sure but it might have something to do with the fact that Quake is getting old. When I did my interview with Hoony in August, I mentioned that unless something big came along, Quake would eventually fade. I believe that the PGL had a lot to do with this when they made their 1on1 tourney for Quake 2 players. This took a lot of the focus away from Quake and QW. Even Clan [9] which became the world's #1 ranked clan, has been inactive for quite a while.

What can we do to get past this? My best suggestion would be to get the WDT back in gear and have somebody take control and "make it happen". Not only would that help the UK, it would help the rest of the world also.

----------

Speaking of the PGL 1on1 tourney. Have you ever seen more boring demos in your life? Sure, it was nice to see Thresh play and Zen played some decent matches but, watching the rest of the demos made me want to start knitting. (thanks Paul2)

----------

I have some demos to post on the Quake demos page. One of the is from IOP-Puta where he breaks his own record for the most reaper frags in a 10 minute match. I haven't watched it yet but, if it's as good as the two before it (by puta and Lakerman), it will be fun to watch.

----------

I noticed that the "Quake Mental Hospital" got a mention on Planetquake yesterday. I'll bet undead John Romero is rolling over in his grave. :-)

----------

I watched a lot of the Clan demos from the PGL tourney. I was impressed at some of the lesser known clans and how well they did. I mentioned on the news page that Thresh didn't play well all week but, he sure showed up in the finals. Since they were playing with a split squad, DR-Frick had to pick up the slack for DR1 until the finals.

----------

I visited the Clan SK home page, while deep into the site, I noticed a mention about my Ultimate Quake Poll. I thought, "that's cool". Then I noticed they didn't have a link to my page for the poll but, they had a link to a local page on their site which was copied directly from my site with all the poll results. WTF?

Now, I don't mind somebody quoting my site or linking my site but, to blatantly rip-off a page in it's entirety (without permission) is going WAY too far. That would be like me just copying Bluesnews news page and saying "here's a local link". (yeah, I know some of you think I do that already :-0)

Don't get me wrong, I love that site and it actually did very well in the poll but, I will contact Griff and kindly ask him to remove that page.

I'm looking to buy a new car. Last week, I went to a car dealer and looked at quite a few of them. After test driving a few, I was about to head home and I noticed a brand new shiny Jaguar they had for sale. I told the salesman that I wasn't interested in buying it but, I would love to take a test drive in the Jag. He told me, no problem.

The car belonged to the sales manager and he was gone for the day. The salesman told me to take the car for the afternoon and enjoy myself. Needless to say, I had a great time cruising around in the Jag and testing it's umm wind tunnel features. :0  I went and picked up a female friend and we went driving around, stopped for something to eat and enjoyed the day.

When I returned the car approx. 4 hours later, I went looking for the salesman. I couldn't find him anywhere. I asked one of the guys there where Gerry was and he told me that earlier that afternoon, Gerry had a heart attack and died on the way to hospital. I was in shock for a minute but, I told the person I was talking to that Gerry had let me take the Jag for a test drive and returned the keys.

He then stunned me by saying "Oh, that's where the Jag went. We didn't know who had it and since it's a new car, they didn't have time to insure it yet". What this means is that I could've taken the car and insured it and nobody would've known I had it or where I got it from. DAMN, DAMN, DAMN!

[Sunday 11/08/98 - 2:00 am]

I was going over the stats for October and it ended up being the busiest month ever on Methos Quake. There was over 15,500 more visitors than the previous top month of August. If you remember, August was the month with the first Ultimate Quake Poll and the unforgettable 9vsDR matches.

Now, having over 500 more visitors every day may not seem like much to places like Blues and PQ but, it means a lot to me. Thanks to all the loyal visitors and the new visitors that arrived in the last few months. Your help in making Methos Quake more popular is appreciated. (honest)

Somebody mentioned to me the other day that lately, my site has been very negative. What the fuck are you talking about? Me negative? Piss off! Err umm, sorry about that. :)

I suppose this comment has some merit but, the negativity isn't intentional. As a matter of fact, I'm usually in an upbeat mood (depending on how often I see my gorgeous blond neighbour). I guess there are a couple of reasons that it may seem that my moods come across in a less than positive way.

First would be the way that I've been ragging on a few gaming companies lately about releasing their endless stream of patches, updates, bug fixes and beta releases when they should finish the game BEFORE it's actually released to the public.

The second reason might my continuous ribbing of Quake 2 and the players. I've done this all along and it's only done in fun.

The third reason might be that Paul2 and his comments on the QMH page are rubbing off on me and I'm getting a completely cynical attitude towards the net. LOL

Anyway, for those that care, I like to be a straight shooter. I call things as I see them and I don't try to "sugarcoat" things so that some people will stay happy. If I see something that deserves a positive mention, I make sure I give credit where credit is due. If I see something that I consider silly, amusing or just plain stupid, I mention that also.

If anybody has a problem with the positive, go talk to Blue. If any of you have a problem with the negative, go talk to Paul2. :-)

----------

Speaking of things that bother me... I don't like the web sites lately that use a java app to automatically update the web site. You can tell these sites by how long it takes to load because it has to load the entire page before it displays anything other than the site name / title graphic at the top.

I don't have a problem with the sites themselves, just the LONG time it takes to load everything before it displays. I won't mention the sites, these people know who they are.

----------

I found Paul2's Tyr0 interview to be vastly amusing. It will be interesting to see the reaction of the guys at Barrysworld will be after Tyr0 threatened to hack their server and saying that "they know not to mess with Tyr0" (paraphrased). If you remember my postings from last week, Barrysworld just went through a rather nasty ordeal with a hacker. It will be interesting to see what they do in this case.

About the spelling on the QMH page. I left all the typos in this time as both Paul2 and myself wanted everybody to realize the intelligence level that Tyr0 has to offer.

----------

Oh, and isn't making threats over the internet some kind of international crime? Seriously, if I remember correctly, Interpol treats those kind of things very seriously.

----------

Is it my imagination or is the entire internet VERY slow tonight? Oh well, that's enough for now, off to visit the "gorgeous blond neighbor" again. W00p!

After reading some of the "pre-reviews" of Quake 3 Arena, some of the new features sounded very cool. I hope that they are as cool in the final game. Without commenting on what I think of Q3A, I will mention some of the items that Redwood mentioned on his page.

  • The character modeling/animation is better than anything out there.
  • Flying / bloody gibs will be back.
  • There are currently 12 weapons in the game, but that may change. Too many weapons can be a bad thing.
  • Health spheres had red 3D crosses inside glass spheres that had reflections on them (really looked like glass). Best looking mirroring around. The level with the whole ceiling mirroring the maze below is really cool looking.
  • Pretty much any type of curved surface they want to make. Gorgeous.
  • Really cool animated skies (can be turned off for more speed).
  • Auto-rate adjustment depending on network conditions so people don’t have to be intricately familiar with console commands to get smooth netplay. This is a complicated item and is one of the big items that will be tested publicly in Q3Test.
  • Trade-offs for better connection/faster response. For example, you can make adjustments that will make instant response ala Quakeworld type networking but at the cost of reliability on poorer connections or a bit slower response ala Quake 2 but more reliable networking.
  • Invisibility is really cool looking, somewhat like an improved predator effect.
  • The multiplayer/net interface will be a much simpler type of GameSpy thing that is used from within the browser.
  • You are shown the name of the person you are tracking when you have your target near them.
  • Your crosshair changes color as your health changes so you don’t have to look all the way down at the HUD if you’re in the middle of heated battle.
  • When you frag somebody, the death message flashes up in easy view.
  • You have a little cool looking icon over your player head in the game if you go to the menu, console, or are chatting. That way there is no more excuse when people frag you while you’re typing.
  • The volumetric fogging looks very realistic yet subtle. It’s not the “hey, there’s fog thrown in for eye candy”, it’s used more to give a cool atmosphere that you just can’t put your finger on.

All of these things sound very cool. There are MANY more cool features in the game. However, everything boils down to gameplay. I've mentioned many, many times before that "gameplay is EVERYTHING". Fancy walls, colors and other graphics mean nothing in a multi-player game.

Here's something for all you movie buffs. I'm an average movie fan but, I found a site on the web where over 1 million people voted for their favorite movie of all time. It was cool seeing some of the movies listed that I had seen before and thought they were great. I would guess that the voters were of a younger crowd as the #1 movie chosen by the voters was Star Wars. Listed below are the top 10 movies from each of the last few decades.

Note: Number listed on the left indicates how the movie ranked overall in the poll.

[Sunday 11/01/98 - 8:30 pm]

I would like to thank all the people who sent kind words about my daughter's poetry escapades in my last update. The comments were appreciated.

----------

After losing my mind last week, I installed Quake 2 on my system after deleting it approximately 5 months ago. I installed the original cd, then updated it with the latest v8827.93 patch. Now, I've never claimed to be good at Q2 and I'm actually quite bad at it but, I wanted to try it out and see what improvements were in the latest few versions.

When I had it on my system previously, I played the single player game all the way through. Then I tried it on-line a couple of times. At the time, there were no deathmatch maps (not that the ones they have now are any good), no teamplay, no skins other than the default ones etc. I was very unimpressed by the product and promptly deleted it.

Okay, on to the present. After loading up the game and spending too long tweaking the damn thing (couldn't they make some of these things default in the game?) so it would run at a decent speed. I tried the single player game and it seemed to run fine.

I logged on to the local Clan TC server and fooled around on it for a bit trying to get use to the physics and learn a few of the DM maps. TC-Sparhawk showed up and I'm just glad he didn't ask me for a 1on1 match. I would've had to kick his ass. (yeah, right!) I had a decent modem ping of about 160-180 for most of the time I was on the server.

There were a few things that I liked about Q2 and a few things I didn't like.

I liked the following...

  • The modem play was very good. it was very smooth and for the most part. I felt like I was in control of the way I played.
  • They've added the command cl_footsteps 0 to disable the sound of footsteps. This is very good. Of course, I didn't know this until after I had been pasted about 10 times.
  • Double jumping. When you hit the jump key kind of like a double mouse click, you can jump to things that you can't in Quake
  • Leap frogging. You can actually jump over somebody or you can jump on top of somebody head and then jump off attaining amazing distance and height
  • I also liked the fact that Sparhawk didn't wipe my butt all over the map. :-)

Things I didn't like

  • The physics were very similar to QW. ie: you can run up an incline and jump twice as high as a level ground jump.
  • The DM maps could possibly be the worst 1on1 maps I've ever seen. They might be good for FFA or very small clan matches but, 1on1 sucks. I like the id 1on1 map called "match1" which was released with v3.12 (I think) but, Sparhawk refused to play it because it reminded him too much of Quake 1 (LOL)
  • The aiming via the crosshairs was way off. This may be partially my fault with not being familiar with the side weapons and the weapons in general. My aim really sucked on a few of the weapons
  • Although the players on the server were generally cool, they get their backs up very easily when you say something even remotely negative about Quake 2
  • The skins and colors. They all look the same when more than a few feet away. There's a female skin but, unless you see her hair moving, it's also hard to tell the difference.
  • Jumping perception. When I jump, it seems like I'm jumping up maybe an inch or two. When others jump, it's like they're flying around the map

Anyway, aside from the fact that I hadn't played Q2 in quite a while, my impression is that it still sucks. The feeling when playing doesn't come close to the feeling when playing an intense 1on1 in Quake. The maps are nicely designed but they lack something when playing 1on1.

Granted, I have only played Q2 on-line 4 or 5 times since the game was released and I will give it a few more tests in the near future to see if it starts to appeal to me a bit more. Then again, I may be comparing Q2 to the wrong game. Comparing it to Quake might be too much to live up to. Perhaps if I compared it to a lot of the other games on the market, it would be rated much higher as I think less of the other games that have been released since Quake was on top.

----------

Griff. are you nuts? You want people to buy your CD? Send a copy to the #1 rated Quake demo site on the planet. :-)  Only joking Griff.

----------

More on Q2. I was on a local server with a bunch of local players. They had a mod called "Nightmare" (I think) where everything is dark and you have a key bound to "flashlight". Now, this mod maybe cool if you know the level but, if you don't know them, it's a disaster.

I ended up staring at the walls through half the match. I ended up getting a couple of frags and then I was told, no, you have to shoot one particular person wearing the female skin (wtf?). Considering it's hard to tell who you're shooting at with the lights on, it was that much harder in the dark. One of the guys said, "if you get killed, tell us where she is". I replied by saying "assuming I have the foggiest idea where I am". LOL
