Quake 2 Update Released
Quake 2 v3.15 is now available for download from id Software's ftp site. If you're
upgrading from v3.14, just download this 3.14 to 3.15 patch (1.01
MB). If you want to download the complete v3.15 release, then download this v3.15 full upgrade
(9.33 MB). Also available is the full v3.15 CTF
upgrade (14.6 MB). You can expect the site to be busy for a while. If you're getting
"server returned extended information", it's just busy. You can get the 3.14 to
3.15 patch only at this
second location which won't be busy. Here are some words from Disruptor regarding the
upgrade.
This upgrade addresses several features, including security, playability, and enhancements.
A new map is also included (in baseq2\pak3.pak) called match1, Reckless Abandon. This map is designed for one on one deathmatch play. It was built by American McGee and Dave "Zoid" Kirsch.
There are tons of other changes and bug fixes included in this new version. Hmmm, wonder if they put in that mod to make it look like Unreal? :)
New Graphics Coming Soon
Today I spoke with [TC]-Reaper who runs Liquid Fusion 3D Design and made my nice animated site button. He told
me that the graphics for the page could be done as early as this Monday. After dealing
with gaming companies for so long and never getting any answers regarding timeframes, this
was quite refreshing. w00p!

Thresh Wins Again
Is this guy good or what? Dennis Fong aka Thresh who already gets money
from MicroSoft for using their MS-Mouse with the wheely thing, now has a new sponsor.
Thresh will now be getting paid to talk about Diamond's Monster 3D II. In return, he will
contribute to a weekly Diamond column with game tips and play in a quarterly Diamond Quake
II tourney. See the
complete article here.

Unreal CTF Coming Soon

Yum, Quake 2 Pro-Rocket
Mod
Get the Pro-Rocket mod for
Quake 2. Enough of this balanced weapons crap, just give me a rocket launcher and get out
of my way. This mod enables the rockets in Q2 to travel at the same speed as in Quake. Now
all we need is Rocket Arena 2 with this mod, w00p! This is cool stuff.
5 Nations Tournament
The UK is having a 5 Nations Quake tournament next month. Five countries
(really?) will supply all-star line-ups to compete for huge prizes. (Wot? No prizes?
Damn!) The 5 countries involved will be England, France, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. All
countries boast some great players. The tourney will take place over 5 weekends in a round
robin style with finals.
Methos Quake has secured a roving reporter for the entire tournament. The reporter, who will be playing on the English squad, will post chronological reports from the start of trials until the end of the tourney. Stay tuned for more details.
ION Storm's Dominion Now
Gold
ION Storm announced that their new game, Dominion: Storm Over Gift3,
has been send to Eidos Interactive for publication and should be available in June. I
don't like "real time strategy" games or war games but this one is very
impressive. Especially the on-line aspect where the wars continue when you're not on-line.
:)
Live Quake 2 Page
History
I've decided to get rid of the live Quake 2 page. Although it very cool to
be able to play Quake 2 directly from a web site, very few people used it. Oh well :(

Scott Miller Interview
Posted
How silly, it was mentioned on BluesNews but, I forgot to mention it on my
own site. Late last night I posted Scott Miller
Interview on the Methos Inviews Page. Founder and
President of Apogee Software (I always
thought it was 3D Realms / Apogee but it's not), Scott was nice enough to answer "a
few" of my questions. If the interview sounds "out of sorts", that's
because it is.
CyberAthetes Get It On!
The Cyberathlete Organization announced their prizes for the upcoming

A Little
Carnage
Methos Quake is a gaming site and sometimes we take games a bit too
seriously. Here's some good "real life" news for a change. A little late, sorry
about that.
Congratulations to Mark "Carnage" Davies and his better half on the birth of their new baby. On May 5th 1998, Andrea gave birth to 7lb 11oz, Jessica. Both mom and daughter are doing well, I'm not sure if daddy Mark will recover though. :)
Congrats again Mark. Remember to make sure she uses a mouse and not a keyboard like her daddy. :)

Spookie
Gets A Name Change
My buddy Spookie who has his Spookie
Side page on Methos Quake sent along word that he has been accepted into Clan XP. He
has been clanless for the past couple of months after Clan Postal disbanded when Reptile
went to DeathRow. After going through what seemed like a bar exam to get in the clan, he
will now be known as XP-Spookie. The Xtreme Prejudice clan has long been regarded as a clan with lots of
talent. Even though in recent months, they've lost players like LittleDragon, Geiger,
Twisted Killer and Unholy who have all joined Thresh in DeathRow, they still have a strong
line-up. Congrats Spookie err umm XP-Spookie.
QuakeWorld
v2.21 Released
Zoid announced in his .plan today that QuakeWorld version 2.21 is now
available on id's ftp site. You can download the full QW v2.21 here (1.9

Upgrade here (590k).
ION Storm
Fires The Wright Guy
Word on GameSpot
reports that ION Storm has fired COO
(Chief Operating Officer) and Co-Founder, Bob Wright. The rumored reason was differences
between Wright and ION Storm President, Todd Porter. With this being a large loss, it
could have serious affects on upcoming ION Storm releases.
An update on BluesNews says that Bob Wright will be suing ION Storm for "breach of fiduciary duties". (fiduciary means credible & trustworthy)

Unreal
Patch v1.01 Released
In record time (same day as release), Epic has released a patch for
Unreal. The difference between this release by Epic and a release by id Software is that
this one isn't a bug fix. The Unreal v1.01
patch (235 KB) enables you to launch Unreal Internet games through your browser.
Unreal v1.01 update patch is now available! This update allows players to join multiplayer games by clicking on links to "*.unreal" files from their web browser. ".unreal" files are simple ini files which tell the player's machine the location and port the server is running on. Links work in both MS Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator (v2.0 and above).
For more information, visit Epic's Unreal Site.
Another
Unreal News Day
It's finally out. The much anticipated game from Epic MegaGames: Unreal
was released in North America today. All other English speaking countries will be released
in the next few day and other languages should be out in about a week. The early reviews
on the game are very good.
Quote from John Carmack's .plan today... "Congratulations to Epic, Unreal looks very good"
Unreal shareware version to be released after E3 (in about 2 weeks)
There's an OGR's Unreal first impressions review available.
Word from Epic on copy protection, "you'll have to have the CD in the drive when you start the game". You can remove it after the game is started.
Spookie has posted a review of Unreal on "The Spookie Side". I'm not quite sure but I think he likes the game. :)

New Look

In my quest for an animated button for the site, somebody has stepped to
the front and volunteered their services. Chris "[TC]-Reaper" Tataryn who runs a
company called Liquid Fusion contacted
me today and had a button for me about 30 minutes later. He also mentioned that he would
be happy to "upgrade" the rest of the graphics on Methos Quake and make it look
"real purdy". Thanks Reaper, I owe you a beer.

An Unreal
News Day
Since people have waited so long for Unreal to become reality, the hype
and anticipation has reached a fever pitch prior to tomorrow's official store release. The
Unreal engine is going to be used sight unseen by three major companies including
MicroSoft and Ion Storm.
I hope the game can live up to the great expectations. From what I've seen, the game has some very nice features and some rather poor ones. As I mentioned yesterday, you'd better have a PC with lots of horsepower to run the game.

Further Conversation
With Zoid
In the wake of my 5 a.m. conversation with Zoid yesterday, he announced
today in his .plan file that QW v2.21 will be released soon. Version 2.21 will fix some
"ugly bugs" and add some server options for the features in v2.20. This will
include the option to enable or disable map crc checking. As of yet, no date has been set
for the next QW version. Here are some excerpts from Zoid's .plan.
I'm working on 2.21. I hope to release it soon since there are some ugly bugs in 2.20 (such as random overflows on servers sometimes). There will be a server upgrade and a client one, but 2.20 clients and servers will be able to talk to 2.21, though I strongly recommend that everyone upgrade to 2.21 when it comes out.
For watervised maps, vis data is no longer included in the map checksum. The 2.21 server turns off checksums BY DEFAULT. Server admins can enable map checksumming by typing 'sv_mapcheck 1'. This map checksum is almost the same as before, except that vis data is not included in the check. This means that maps that just has the vis/portal information changed (for watervis) will pass the checksum test. Maps with hacked textures, removed walls, or waterhack will not.
Cool Site of the Day
If you view This Page with This Plugin, you'll see a 360 degree panorama view of Quake 2. You can

power-ups. It is slated for release this summer.

New QuakeWorld v2.20
Released
id Software released
QuakeWorld v2.2 on their ftp
site (or any mirror site) a couple of hours ago. No mention of it on their web site or
any other site so far. Go here to download the Client version 2.20 (1.96
MB) and the Server
version 2.20 (238k). The Unix version is also available on the ftp site.
According to the readme file, a v2.2 server is required for the client to connect. This means you have to make sure your favorite server is already running v2.20. I also found out that if you're using GameSpy to connect to a server, it requires that you use GameSpy v1.53 which is included with QW v2.2

John Carmack Laments Q2
Hackers
John Carmack of id
Software updated his
.plan with words regarding the "backdoor bug" in the Q2 server code and
confirms Zoid's announcement of a new Quake 2 and QuakeWorld coming out soon.
The rcon backdoor was added to help the development of QuakeWorld (It is not present in Quake 1). At the time, attacking Quake servers with spoofed packets was not the popular sport it seems to have become with Quake 2, so I didn't think much about the potential for exploitation.
It was a convenient feature for us, but it turned out to be irresponsible. Sorry.
There will be new releases of QuakeWorld and Quake 2 soon.
Gibfest '98 Quake 2
